Ancient port of Piombino was industrialized by Alfred Novell in 1865 already by establishing the very first italian steel mill using the Bessemer converter.

Today the pig iron and steel production is handled by one high-capacity blast furnace no.4 and three BOF vessels. Main products are hot rolled wires and rails mainly.
Overall production capacity is 2.5 million tonnes of crude steel per year.

Edit: Blast furnace no.4 was shutdown on 24th April 2014.
Edit 2: Demolition of the entire plant started in 2016.
