The Jankowice Mine is one of the most important coal mines in the Silesian region, located in the town of Rybnik. The coal deposit is situated under the territory of the municipalities of Rybnik, Świerklany and Marklowice. Construction of the mine began in 1913 and the first coal was extracted on 21st of June 1916. During its history, the mine changed its name several times - in 1922 it was renamed ´Szyby Blücher´ and since 1934 it has been called ´Jankowice´. Between 1974 and 1988 the mine underwent extensive modernisation, during which new shafts V, Va and VI were built. Annual coal production increased from 3,5 million tonnes in 1979 to 5,6 million tonnes in 1988, making the mine one of the most productive in the region.
In 2016, the mine was incorporated into the state-owned company Polska Grupa Górnicza (PGG) and became part of the ROW (Rybnicki Okręg Węglowy) mining complex. The mine has five shafts, the most important of which is shaft VII, used for actual mining, and the modern shaft VIII, used for transporting workers and materials underground.
