AZA Acero Sostenible, Colina
Nowadays the only steel producer in Chile is located in the suburbs of Santiago de Chile. The Colina steel plant was commissioned in 1999.
However the company´s history dates back to 1953, when Metalúrgicas AZA was founded in the Renca district, operating a profile rolling mill, to which an electric steel plant was added in the early 1960s.
In 1992 Brazilian manufacturer Gerdau acquired AZA assets and in 1999 began construction of a the modern mini-mill in Colina. At the same time, steel production at the Renca plant ceased and only the rolling mill remains in operation.
In 2018 Gerdau sells its entire stake in AZA to a consortium of four Chilean investors: Ingeniería e Inversiones Limitada, Inversiones Reyosan SpA, Los Andes S.A. de Inversiones, and Matco Cables SpA.
The AZA Acero Sostenible plant produces green steel using renewable resources and its main products are rolled bars, rods and profiles with an annual volume of 520,000 tonnes.
