Founded in 1971 in Trier’s harbor by Alfred and Walter Rass, the Moselstahlwerk became an important regional steel producer specializing in wire rod made from recycled scrap steel.
After a devastating fire destroyed the continuous casting plant in 2001, the company entered insolvency in 2002. Later that year, Ulrich and Christoph Rass acquired the site and rebuilt the works within nine months, investing heavily in modernization.
In 2007, further technological upgrades strengthened production capacity and competitiveness. Despite another insolvency phase in 2011–2012, the plant survived and continued operations as MSW Moselstahlwerk GmbH.
Today, the Trier facility remains the only rolling mill in Rhineland-Palatinate and focuses on wire rod production for European markets.
