SSAB Raahe
One of the youngest integrated plants in Europe is located in the far North town of Raahe.
The decision was made by the Finnish government at the beginning of the 1960s to provide sufficient steel supply for national heavy industry. The works were named Rautaruukki (rauta = iron, ruukki = mill).
The first blast furnace was put in operation in 1964 and the LD steel plant with continuous slab casting followed in 1967.
The heavy plate and hot strip rolling mill are dating back to the early 1970s.
The second blast furnace was built in 1976.
After partial privatization in 1994 the works operates under the new name "Ruukki"
Since 2014 the iron&steel making operations are operated by SSAB group, which is rapidly working on fossil-free steel transition.
