The Ziemowit colliery is a large hard coal mine located in Lędziny in southern Poland, within the Upper Silesian Coal Basin. Coal mining in the Lędziny area began in 1842, when the first mine, “Radość Henryka,” was established after the discovery of coal deposits. These developments contributed significantly to the economic growth and industrial transformation of the region.
The Ziemowit mine officially opened on 3 December 1952 and has since become one of the largest hard coal mines in Poland, employing about 4,600 workers. In the past it belonged to the Nadwiślańska Coal Company, and on 1 February 2003 it became part of Kompania Węglowa S.A. in Katowice. Today it operates within the Piast-Ziemowit mining complex of the Polish Mining Group (PGG).
The mine is located in the south-eastern part of the Upper Silesian Coal Basin and extracts coal in the “Lędziny I” mining area covering about 63.6 km², while the wider mining terrain reaches over 71 km². Mining operations take place mainly beneath agricultural and forested land and are conducted at depths of approximately 500 and 650 meters using several active shafts.
