ArcelorMittal Gijón
Close cooperation between Sociedad Metalúrgica Duro Felguera, Fábrica de Mieres and Sociedad Moreda-Gijón led to the decision in 1966 to build a modern metallurgical plant on the outskirts of Gijón.
Production began in 1971, when the construction of blast furnace No. 1 was completed. Blast furnace No. 2 was built the following year.
The entire metallurgical complex was built according to the German Krupp model with the Austrian Linz-Donawitz steelmaking technology applied. The original rolling mill was supplied by Blaw-Knox.
In 1973 the ironworks became the property of Empresa Nacional Siderúrgica, S.A. (ENSIDESA). In 1994 it was merged into Corporación Siderúrgica Integral, only to be taken over by the Aceralia Group three years later. Aceralia became Arcelor and ArcelorMittal later on.
The Gijón mill currently produces rolled rails, heavy plates and wire.
