Pacific Steel Otahuhu

Pacific Steel Otahuhu

The decision to build New Zealand´s first merchant bar mill, which would also be capable to recycle scrap, was made by the government in 1959.

Fletcher & Industrial Metals started production here, at the suburbs of Auckland called Ōtāhuhu, in 1963 and by the 1970s had reached capacity of 100,000 tonnes of steel.

In 2015 the plant was purchased by Australian company BlueScope, which closed the melt shop and currently operates only the bar mill. Today Pacific Steel is the only producer of reinforcing steel and wire mesh in the entire country.
