Established in 1937 by Alexander Dingwall and William Price, Prima Foundry began its journey in Benoni, South Africa. The company´s name, "Prima," is a fusion of "Price" and "Mary," honoring the union of the founders´ children, Mary Dingwall and Les Price.
Starting with two 1t electric arc furnace, Prima produced approximately 50 tons of castings monthly. By 1948, the company expanded by acquiring additional land to establish a second foundry, known as the AD Foundry, in partnership with Robert Hudson Engineering.
In a significant development, Prima was acquired by ME Elecmetal in 2024, a global mining supply company headquartered in Chile. This acquisition aims to bolster ME Elecmetal´s ability to provide comprehensive solutions to mining operations worldwide.
Today, Prima Foundry stands as a testament to enduring innovation and commitment to the mining industry, poised to continue its legacy under new stewardship.
