The Livezeni Mine, located in Petroșani in Romania’s Jiu Valley, developed as part of the region’s long coal-mining tradition. Geological surveys of the Livezeni coalfield began in 1914 and were resumed in 1955–1956. Modern mine development started in 1967 with the sinking of the East Shaft, and production officially began in August 1972, initially producing about 50,000 tonnes of coal.
During the communist period, Livezeni expanded and became an important underground coal operation, with production eventually reaching over one million tonnes annually. A major methane explosion on 29 November 1980 killed 53 people and injured 77.
After 1990, restructuring reduced coal production across the Jiu Valley. Livezeni remained one of the region’s operating mines and is now scheduled for closure and ecological rehabilitation by 2032 as Romania transitions away from coal.
