Illawarra Coke Company

The rich coal deposits in the Coalcliff area (New South Wales) began to be mined in 1878 already by the Jetty Mine.

First coke ovens were put into operation few decades later - by 1914.

In 1954 the plant was renamed to Kembla Coal and Coke (KKC).

In 1984 the Corrimal works nearby were merged into one comapny.

Coal mining was shutdown for good in 1991 and five years later the coking plant was bought by the Canadian company Rio Tinto.

The Coalcliff coking plant was closed in 2013 after 99 years of continuous coke production.

Nowadays the land is determined for redevelopment.
