The first rolling mill in Gateshead was founded in 1918 by Redheugh Iron & Steel Company. The production was focused on hot rolled plates and sheets.

In 1970 the mill was taken over by Spartan Steel & Alloys, based in Sheffield and became part of the Firth Holding Company in 1988.

Before that the plant went through a major modernization when the American company UNITED installed a new heavy plate mill here.

In 2001 the works were bought by italian group Gruppo Malacalza.

Since 2008 the rolling mill is part of Ukrainian company Metinvest, which is processesing steel slabs from their two steelworks in Mariupol.
