The Lonea Mine, in the eastern Jiu Valley near Petrila, is one of Romania’s historic coal mines.
Systematic underground development began in the 1870s, and the mine became an important source of coal for the region’s growing industry.
During the communist period, particularly under Nicolae Ceaușescu, Lonea underwent significant modernization. Around 1980, investments increased production capacity, improved underground ventilation and safety, and modernized extraction infrastructure. In 1981, three slurry-injection stations were built to help control and extinguish mine fires. The mine reached its peak during the “Golden Era,” producing a record 1.304 million tonnes of coal in 1989. After 1990, production and employment declined as Romania restructured its mining industry.
Lonea subsequently entered a long process of contraction and closure. Complexul Energetic Hunedoara, its operator from 2011, entered insolvency in 2019 and was declared bankrupt in 2025.
Today the mining operations are ceased and the whole site is undergoing demolition.
