The “Julian” Coal Mine in Piekary Śląskie was officially opened on December 4, 1954, though its origins date back to the 1930s with the sinking of the first shafts. It became an important producer in Upper Silesia, especially during the industrial peak of the 1970s.
In 1999, the mine lost its independence and was incorporated into the “Piekary” operation. Over time, it became part of a larger mining complex known as opalnia Węgla Kamiennego Piekary (KWK “Piekary”).
Coal extraction in the former “Julian” mine area finally ceased on January 31, 2020, marking the end of over six decades of mining activity and closing an important chapter in the region’s industrial history.
Most part of the structures were torn down already, only the headframe of pit no.I was preserved.
