The ČSM coal mine, located in Stonava in the Karviná region of the Czech Republic, has played an important role in the country´s industrial history.
Its construction began on 16 June 1959, following geological surveys that confirmed significant coal reserves. The first coal was extracted in December 1968. The mine developed into two main sections, ČSM-Sever (North) and ČSM-Jih (South), employing thousands of miners over the decades.
Despite technological modernisation and continued investment, declining coal demand and rising extraction costs gradually made operations uneconomical. ČSM became the last operating hard coal mine in Czechia. Mining officially ended on 31 January 2026, with the symbolic last coal wagon brought to the surface on 4 February.
Currently, OKD is carrying out technical decommissioning, expected to continue until 2028.
