The first plans to built a brand new mill in the north part of Juiz de Fora (Minas Gerais) were proposed in 1980. Commercial steel production started in 1984.
The plant, with two charcoal blast furnaces, one 110t electric arc furnace and a wire&rod mill, was built by the Brazilian company ´Grupo Mendes Júnior´ and later operated by the Belgian-Brazilian company ´Companhia Siderúrgica Belgo-Mineira´.
The works were gradually integrated into the ArcelorMittal group during the period 2001-2006.
Today the plant is part of ArcelorMittal Brasil´s Aços Longos with annual capacity over one million tonnes of steel.
