Marcegaglia Sheffield

The history of stainless steel making at Shepcote Lane, Sheffield, is dating back to 1948, when the first mill was established by Firth Vickers company.

The 1950s saw the formation of a joint venture between Firth Vickers and Samuel Fox and Company, focusing on cold rolling stainless steel at Shepcote Lane. This facility became part of British Steel Corporation in 1967 following industry nationalization.

The SMACC (Stainless Melting and Continuous Casting) was built in 1977.

In 2001, the Finnish company Outokumpu acquired the Sheffield facility through its merger with Avesta Sheffield. Outokumpu carried on the operations, emphasizing long products like bars and rods.

The hot and cold rolling operations were shutdown for good in 2006.

In 2023, Marcegaglia, an Italian steel group, acquired the Sheffield plant from Outokumpu.

The steel plant produces semi-finished products as slabs, blooms and/or billets
