CWM’s industrial story began in 1909, when the Great Western Colliery Company started sinking the Margaret and Mildred shafts to supply steam coal for the Great Western Railway.
Coal production began in 1914, and the colliery soon became a major local employer. After nationalisation in 1947, CWM underwent extensive modernisation during the 1950s, including new winding equipment and underground links to Coedely Colliery. By the early 1970s, around 1,500 miners were producing over 500,000 tonnes of coal annually. Its naturally low-sulphur coal was ideal for foundry coke, leading to the development of the adjoining CWM Coke Works.
The colliery closed in 1986, but the coke works continued until June 2002, ending nearly a century of industrial activity.
