The coke plant located in the town of Lukavac in northeastern Bosnia and Herzegovina, is one of the most significant industrial facilities in the region. Founded in 1961, during the era of socialist Yugoslavia, it was established as a key part of the country’s push for heavy industrialization.
Throughout the 1970s and 1980s, Koksara Lukavac expanded its operations, employing thousands and supporting the growth of Lukavac as an industrial town. However, the Bosnian War in the 1990s caused serious damage to the facility and disrupted production. After the war, partial revitalization efforts began, including privatization and foreign investment.
Koksara d.o.o. Lukavac, founded in 2003 as a successor to the old GIKIL plant. The Indian Ispat Group acquired majority control in 2003 through privatization. Since then, Global Steel Holdings has retained management rights.
Today, Koksara Lukavac continues to shape the identity and economy of Lukavac.
